The Telling Story of the Tell All’ Oprah Interview

This week is awash with news, snippets and memes of the tell-all Megan and Harry interview conducted by one broadcast queen (Oprah) maligning another Queen’s (Elizabeth II) institution and family across the pond.

This finger pointing by Megan and Harry on the maltreatment of well… basically Megan has raised a few issues and debates. As for Harry, in his words he didn’t know any different before Megan came into his life, apparently he was blissfully unaware of the gilded trap he was in and enjoying all the privileges that go with it.

Among these issues, just to name a few; the racism rampant behind closed castle doors and openly in British media, who is actually running the Firm (or the Institution as it is called by its royal members), who holds the financial reigns and how payout decisions are made or what are they based on, how much of a control or influence the Institution have on tabloid stories about Royals and who decides on what-where -who of public exposure of Royals, just to name a few.

But one thing free-thinking, outspoken, standing on her own two little feet since the age of thirteen Megan forgot very conveniently while delivering blow upon blow on the Royal family is that when she married her Prince Charming Harry, she was marrying into an age old institution dedicated to life-long service. She had to align herself to their protocols. And those protocols exist for a reason. They uphold the Monarchy.

Is the Monarchy dated? Perhaps. Is it slow to embrace modernity? Perhaps. Does it have carriage-loads of pomp and show? Perhaps (which Megan did not object to while getting married, mind you). Does it need to be abolished and this is the final nail in its coffin? Only time will tell.

For Megan to come in and be put in public service along with Harry was a given. She expected that and even mentioned in the interview that she wrote letter to the Institution saying ‘I am here dedicated to your cause, use me as you will’. But what she did not expect was that there is a pecking order — always has been and always will be in the Monarchy.
